CoPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) students gained valuable volunteering experience when they joined FirstLove Foundation food bank helpers to unpack; sort and classify food donations by their sell by dates.

Organisers were impressed by the pupils’ hard work and enthusiasm. Pupils also learned about the social inequalities that exist in Tower Hamlets.

Year 10 pupil, Samirah, said: “When I got there I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it, but the moment I started working I  loved it.

“The helpers told us anecdotes about local people and what they are going through; it was an eye opener, they could be our neighbours.

“FirstLove also give people advice on health, housing and benefits, to help them get what they deserve.

“It’s an experience that will stay with me, I realise I should be more grateful and I won’t just throw things away without thinking.”

The volunteering session follows a highly successful food collection held in the school before Christmas.
