Teaching History in Ypres

History Department staff took pupils to the battlefields of Ypres in Belgium, to help them deepen their understanding of the conditions soldiers fought in and the horrors of World War I.

The trip took place over the weekend of Remembrance Sunday, which commemorates all British service members who have died in wars and other military conflicts since the beginning of the first World War.

Pupils visited the war sites and cemeteries. Head of History Ms Khanom said:

“ It was a euphoric feeling, walking through the grounds and remembering the soldiers who'd lost their lives. In death we're all the same; race, gender, sexuality and rank does not divide us.”

Year 13 students have been learning about the history of the Holocaust. Two of them visited Auschwitz Birkenau, a former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, which is now a memorial and museum. Click here for their testimonial newsletter.
